Announcing A Native TypePad Application for BlackBerry®
May 14, 2008
TypePad’s Mobile offering keeps getting better: Today we’re launching a native application of TypePad for use on the BlackBerry® Curve™ and Pearl™.
You can now use those devices to compose, edit, draft and publish
blog posts within the BlackBerry interface. This means you can write posts at any time, and from anywhere – whether you’re waiting for a train or plane, you have a few minutes before your next meeting starts, or if you want to be the first to upload notes and thoughts from a conference you’re attending. If you have a BlackBerry Curve or Pearl you can also take photos and quickly and easily upload them onto your TypePad
blog. The camera integration lets you capture images and publish them on your blog in two clicks.

With this announcement, Six Apart now supports 90% of the mobile market, including Symbian Series 60, Windows Mobile and Palm, as well as a web application for the Apple iPhone. We also expect that a native application for the iPhone will be available soon.

I don't see a way to select or change my post category when using the new Blackberry TypePad app. Also, what is the Pending Items feature? Other than that, I think it's really cool.

Hi Sue -- In order to change a category, use the trackball of your BlackBerry phone, go to the “category” label and either press the trackball or press the BB button and choose select. That should let you pick the categories you want. The Pending Items feature is a queue where posts are stored while they are being sent. Once a post is sent, it’s not in the Pending Items list anymore. I hope that helps!

I absolutely love the new application and I have two qestions.
1. How can I insert a paragraph break?
2. Can multiple categories be assigned?
Thanks!

Hi Vanessa - To answer your questions:
1- This is a known issue. We will release another version of the client in the next week or so that will correct it.
2- You can’t assign multiple categories yet, but the team has it on their radar as something they'd like to add in the future.

Has a new version ever been released over this past year? I just reinstalled the BlackBerry client and it still has numerous issues I remember from when I installed it after first release. These are:
- Unable to insert paragraph breaks
- Can't get it to update my categories list (I could swear there was a manual update option on the S60 client when I used to use that)
- Does not use the standard BlackBerry text entry API, so it does not automatically punctuate, auto capitalize after period, or automatically begin new sentances after pressing space twice. Does not make use of any of the BlackBerries autotext abilities. It very much just feels like a straight port of a Java phone app.
The only thing I've noticed that was fixed was it not crashing when I'd click on the "Take a photo" function on my cameraless 8830.
Not trying to sound negative, it's a free application afterall, I was just hoping that it would have been more polished by now. As it is I find it rather unusable because of the above deficiencies.

Hi

some of our mobile application development has been slowed down a bit, since we're working so hard on the main application right now. Have you had more success with using the email functionality on your device? (I'm an iPhone user, so I don't know much about the practical ins and outs of the Blackberry app - just curious.)

This sounds terrific and something that I've been waiting for. Do you know when it will run on the Black Berry 8330? Thanks.
