Integrating Zemanta into your compose experience

We're very happy to launch a new feature to our Beta team today. Recommended Links will make adding useful and relevant links to your posts fast and fun. It's powered by our new partner Zemanta (read their press release about the integration) and is the first in a series of integrations that will help bloggers add great links and photos to create even richer posts. If you'd like access to Recommend links right now, please visit your Account page and check the box to join the Typepad Beta Team.

The Zemanta-generated recommendations will be pulled from your previously published posts, as well as relevant posts from other Typepad bloggers and articles across the internet. You'll be able to compose your posts per usual, then expand the Zemanta section below the editor to see the recommended links relevant to the post content.

Zemanta-collapsed

When you click on the collapsed Recommended Links section, you'll be able to see generated links that are recommended to enhance your post. If you don't see anything right away, click the Update button.

Zemanta-generated-links

If the keywords trigger multiple articles you'll be able to select from any one of them and the associated text in your post will become linked to the article you chose.

Zemanta-selected-links

That's all there is to it! Zemanta is super quick, and a fantastic way to turn your everyday post into content that is rich with relevant information that benefits both your blog and its readers. We look forward to your feedback!

Hello,

This new feature does not justify my use of it. Most importantly, there is no option to create linkeage to my own Blog. Isn't the goal to retain users on our Blogs as much as possible? I believe directing them to Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, and elswhere defeats the purpose.

Therefore, I will continue to provide my own "in-site" links which will keep my readers on my Blog. If (when) you offer this much-needed enhancement, I will reconsider my position.

Thanks,
deAnguelo

How do you turn off the feature? A blog about motherhood links to a page about car seats which is totally irrelevant to my readers. Readers' time is precious. I'm not going to send them to sites that have no relevance.

Thanks,
Amy

Howard Getson

I use Zemanta as a Firefox plugin. Do I need to disable that?

Zemanta is terrific, and I love that you can customize sources (to improve the relevance of links).

jeff reine

Thanks for the feedback, deAnguelo! This is the first step with Zemanta. We will be working them in an on-going manner so you can customize the tool and surface relevant links to your own blog, too. This is our first step with them, and we're excited to take it.

Andraz Tori

You are right, internal links are important too. We'll be aggregating your own blog and suggest your own content too. It might take some time to get that into our index, you should see it working soon.

Andraz from Zemanta

Thanks for commenting, Amy. The links are contextually driven based on the content in the post. We'll be working with Zemanta to fine tune the links, make them more personal and more valuable. This is our first step with them.

You can close the feature by clicking on the "down arrow" and it will remember to stay closed when you come back.

Thanks for blogging with us... your Mothers Day posts are inspiring!

deAnguelo

Hello Jeff,

This "first step" is taking my readers "off the cliff", so to speak. While you're working on this issue, what can we do to disable the feature?

deAnguelo

jeff reine

Hey, Howard - glad you like it! The Typepad feature should "win out" so no need to disable the FF plug-in. But please keep an eye on it and let us know how it's working. We'll be working with Zemanta to bring all of the functionality from the plug-in (and hopefully more) over to Typepad.

jeff reine

Just minimize the feature by clicking the "down arrow" and keep on blogging!

Andraz Tori

Hi Howard,

you just need to turn on "beta" option under "Account". Then you will be getting TypePad-optimized Zemanta instead of the Firefox one. The difference is that with Typepad version we will suggest in-text links back to your blog (after it gets aggregated). That's not yet available in Firefox version.

Thank you for your kind words! We'll keep on improving!

Hello Andraz,

Internal links are more important than external links; as the internal linkeage should be our first choice because I don't know of any web developer that wants to drive traffic away from their site.

deAnguelo

Bri

Hi deAnguelo!

As Jeff mentions, you can minimize the feature so that it's not as visible when composing. Unless you USE the feature, by selecting a recommended link for use in your post(s), then you won't have to be concerned about it impacting your readers at all.

Once your blog is aggregated/cached into the Zemanta system you may want to take a few minutes to try the Recommended Links feature. It really is quite fantastic! While you may not feel a need for it with every post, I'm sure it'll come in handy for a handful of them in the future.

deAnguelo

Hello Jeff,

I'll just ignore the suggested external links for now. I see that, as long as I don't apply tne "update" to the suggestions, my posts will be unaffected.

Please let us know when the in-text links back to our blogs completes aggregation. I can forsee it an extremely useful and valuable tool.

Thanks,
deAnguelo

Andraz Tori

Hi de Anguelo,

can you send us an email to support@zemanta.com so we can make sure that Zemanta on TypePad will work well for you? (and let you know when your content is going to be indexed).

Andraz from Zemanta

Bri

It's all about context, I think. One of the best things about the inclusion of your own posts is just what you mentioned--internal linking. If you take a look at Zemanta's press release post (linked in our post above), you'll see that the internal links will appear as the first options above the external links in the individual drop-downs per keyword/phrase.

Andraz Tori

Just to be clear - absolutely nothing will get into your posts if you don't explicitly click on the given recommendation.

Andraz from Zemanta

Bri

Hi again!

I don't think we'll have an update for when all Typepad blogs are completely aggregated, as that's going to greatly depend on how large your blog is. For some users, with newer blogs or fewer posts, that could be little to no time at all. For those with older blogs or hundreds (thousands?) of posts, it'll take some time longer. I recommend just occasionally expanding the Recommended Links section, checking to see if any of your own posts pop up in the links that are generated, then collapsing the selection again if they haven't.

We look forward to your feedback when the aggregation is complete for your blog and you've had the chance to really use the feature. :D

deAnguelo

Hi Brianna,

I discovered not using the feature works for me right now, and I can see the feature being extremely helpful for my Blog.

But, when do you expect the aggregate/cache to be completed?

deAnguelo

Bri

Thanks for all your help, Andraz! It's reassuring to have another voice pipe up to confirm behaviors for Typepad users. ;)

deAnguelo

Absolutely, Andraz

Thanks!

deAnguelo

Andraz & Brianna,

I would like to commend you both for your quick, and informative responses. They were very reassuring. I will take serious note of all of your suggestions. And, Thank You again.

This was was not a test!

I have an nine-year-old blog with thousands of posts. I use the 'Link Within' widget which generates my own content as suggested reading.
Please explain why I would want to switch, given that I do not wish to link to off-site blogs?
Thanks.

Andraž Tori

Oh there's no need to switch, this is complementary functionality.

What you are getting is easy linking from inside your text to both your own posts and external posts. Linkwithin puts links (with images) below your article. Zemanta's Typepad version allows you to build links directly from phrases of your text. Naturally that only happens when you explicitly chose to do so.

I have installed Zemanta in the past and used it on other blogs and absolutely loved it, so now to have it as a regular feature is fantastic. As a librarian, I believe readers of my blog can never have too much information, so to be able to add outbound links to further resources at a click is a real asset for me and my readers. I also love how easy Zemanta makes it to keep readers on my own blog with the use of links to my own blog posts. Either way, this is a win-win for me!

Andraž Tori

Hi deAnguelo,

I've just checked the status of indexing your site. While we started to index your feed, it is basically empty (a single item there). So we can't get your content to put it into our index. That unfortunately means we won't be able to recommend links back to your own posts.

The feed is here http://deanguelo.blogs.com/chocolateblog/rss.xml You probably can set it to expose a lot more stories.

Andraz from Zemanta

Andraž Tori

Thank you for your kind words! We'll be introducing Zemanta capabilities to Typepad version step-by step. We're looking forward to serve you with great content suggestions!

deAnguelo

Hi Andraz,

This news is troubling; however, I belive I can make the site prime for indexing if you tell me whats missing or what I need to do to make it index-ready.

Please advise!
deAnguelo

Thanks for clarifying that for me!

Bri

deAnguelo,

It looks like Zemanta's indexing is based on RSS, so since you've only got one post set to display on the front page of your blog, only one post is reflected in your RSS feed.

I'm going to discuss this with some of my colleagues, but in the meantime you can increase the number of posts to display at Settings > Posts.

Anna Farmery

I seem as though I may buck the trend because I really love it! The only thing I would like is a little more variation on the posts.....so for the last 3 days the same previous posts came up and would like to go back a bit further?

But this has made my life a lot easier and made me link more often to my own work.....

Thanks Typepad

Would also love a header generator or a button maker that allows images...for linking sidebar to other pages? But love what you guys do....

Bri

Hi Anna! Currently the posts that pop up will only be what's seen in your blog's feed. We're aware of this and are working with Zemanta to correct that behavior so more posts can be indexed for the feature.

Well, looks interesting. I'll take a look. These links don't popup or use pop-overs or hoverovers in any way, do they? I do not like that style of links and believe it interferes with reading.

For those who want to keep users on your blog or site, well, welcome to the Internet. That style of belief (keep them here, never use external links) is so out-of-date I can't believe that notion still exists. *Everything* is one click away from your readers or users, so adding value by good links OUTBOUND is a good thing. They will go elsewhere anyway; they will read elsewhere; they will not only look at your blog and logout, lol. So, join the Internet and provide good links outward, and your readers will always appreciate it, I think.

Best,
DrWeb

Bri

Hi! The links don't popup or over, nor do they hover. They act simply like regular links--because they are! :)

Thanks, Brianna. Those are best kind...
