From the SAY blog: The Real Reason No One Sees Online Ads

image from saymedia.typepad.com

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

Leonardo Da Vinci

Here's a sobering statistic: The average time spent on a Web page is steadily decreasing, with users spending only 40 seconds on a single page. Even worse for publishers and advertisers, 31 percent of ads are never even seen. That's why last September we launched the Clean Campaign, our commitment to making the digital content experience better for everyone by cutting clutter and focusing on the content consumers care about. Messy Web pages create a chaotic experience that’s frustrating for everyone involved, including readers, publishers, and advertisers.

Rereleasing the Aviary Editor

The Aviary Editor is now available to all Typepad bloggers!

We have been working hard on resolving the issues with Internet Explorer and the Aviary image editor and we believe we now have a fix in place. Beginning today, we will once again begin rolling out the Aviary image editor to Typepad subscribers.

Foxy!
The image editor hard at work.

If you're having any problems with the new editor at first, don't panic!  If you're using Internet Explorer 9, you need to make sure that you have not enabled compatibility mode.  Compatibility mode and the new editor are not compatible.

To turn Compatibility View off, click the Compatibility View button in your address bar to make the icon change from a solid blue color to an outline like this:Picture of the Compatibility View button (off)

Microsoft also has more information about the compatibility view option in Internet Explorer.

We recommend that all Internet Explorer 9 users clear their typepad.com cookies and cache after making sure compatibility mode is disabled.  We have more information on how to do this in the Knowledge Base.

If you continue to have problems, please open a help ticket so that we can work directly with you to get you blogging!

Smart Energy, Smart New Design

Et-echelon

Do you have a website that has branding or a look and feel you want to use on Typepad, but the layout doesn't really work for a blog? Brennan of Echelon, an energy company, found himself in this situation. The Echelon team weren't sure how they could adapt their company's website design to their blog so Brennan contacted Typepad blog services. We worked together with Brennan and Echelon to create a new design for their blog, Smart Energy, that incorporated Echelon's branding and some of the look and feel from the website but in a layout that works great for a blog. They were very pleased with the results.

Whether you need us to implement an existing design, create a new design, or (like Echelon) set up something in between, Typepad blog services has you covered! Sign up today. And be sure to check out Smart Energy while you're at it.

P.S. You can view this and many other great blogs in our portfolio.

Did You Know?: Post Footer Options - Part I

There are many options for your post footer.  Today we're going to look into the text options that you can add there.

To edit your Post Footer, you need to go to Design > Content.  There, click the pencil icon for Post Footer.

Postfooter
These are the options that you'll see first:

Posted - This adds the word "Posted" to the beginning of your post footer.  This is particularly good to pair with the Author Name option.

-This option adds a thumbnail of your profile picture to the post footer.  It's a great way to strengthen your identity if your reader's mind.

- This is another great way to make sure your readers know who created the post they're reading. This is even more important for blogs with multiple authors.

-Adding the date option is a great way to let your readers know when a post was written.

- While maybe not as important as the date option, adding the time to your post footer is a good way to give your readers insight into when you actually created your post.

- It's highly encouraged that you add categories to your posts. Highlighting these categories in the post footer is an easy way for your readers to then find posts on similar things.

- This adds links to the Technorati search results for the same keywords.

You can read more about the post footer options in the Knowledge Base.

We hope you found this useful! Check back in two weeks to learn about the button options you can add to your post.

PSA: Are you seeing weird, text-based ads?

We've received several help tickets from subscribers who are seeing unwanted text links on their blogs. Typepad doesn't place ads on blogs without user permission, so we strongly recommend making sure you don't have malware on your computer that's forcing ads into your browser. If you don't have an anti-virus program on your computer, Lavasoft is a good place to start.

One malware application we've been seeing in particular is a browser extension called Text Enhance. When installed, the extension combs through the sites you're visiting and places spam links within the text of those sites. It can look like the site itself is serving the ads so it can be jarring if you're seeing those links on your own blog. Removing Text Enhance from your browser will resolve the issue.

More information about Text Enhance and steps for removing it can be found here.
